The Sander Thoenes Memorial Fund
Financial Times correspondent Sander Thoenes was allegedly murdered by Indonesian soldiers in East Timor in September 1999. The fund, set up in his memory, aims to support the training of East Timorese journalists. Its first major project was to help an East Timorese journalist, Francez Suni, obtain his journalism degree in Australia. Other East Timorese have also received funding, including several who have studied and taken courses at the School of Broadcast Media in Jakarta.
